One Park – Two Blocks

  • The West Block Visitor Centre in Val Marie and the East Block Rock Creek Visitor Centre are 166 km apart, approximately a 2-hour drive. When making reservations, please pay close attention to which block and campground you are choosing.

    If your reservation is for the Frenchman Valley Campground, please check-in at the West Block Visitor Centre in Val Marie or the Frenchman Valley Campground Kiosk.

    If your reservation is for the Rock Creek Campground, please check-in at the Rock Creek Visitor Centre located at the Rock Creek Campground in the East Block.

Frenchman Valley Campground

Frenchman Valley Campground, West Block

Located in the heart of the West Block, the Frenchman Valley Campground offers a peaceful prairie setting. With a view of the Frenchman River, rolling hills, incredible sunsets, and possibly bison, the Frenchman Valley Campground is the perfect destination for your front country camping experience. Enjoy the brilliant night sky with amenities nearby.

Rock Creek Campground (East Block)

Rock Creek Campground.

The Rock Creek Campground is home to the Rock Creek Visitor Centre located in the East Block of Grasslands National Park. It also offers – amazing skies day and night, the leopard frogs’ symphony at dusk, and the meadowlarks’ serenade at dawn. Enjoy prairie elegance.

Backcountry camping in Grasslands National Park.

Backcountry camping

Drop your pack following an exhilarating hike. Pitch a tent where no one has camped before – well, maybe not for a thousand years! Look forward to the sunset, and perhaps hear a coyote howl. The park is yours to explore when Back Country Camping.

West Block
  • Reserve in advance through the Parks Canada Reservations service or register in person at the Visitor Centre
  • Choose a Backcountry Zone and park at designated trailhead
  • Plan to camp out of view of roads and trails – a minimum of 1 km – as there are no designated backcountry sites
  • No open fires are permitted
  • Conditions vary year-round, but plan for fire bans (including camp stoves) in summer. Contact the Visitor Centre for details
  • Plan to carry sufficient water for your stay. All surface water in the area is unfit for human consumption. Treating water by boiling, filtering or adding iodine may remove some bacteria, but will not help with the salinity
  • Pack out everything that was packed in
  • GPS units are recommended in some backcountry areas and are available to rent at the Visitor Centre

Equestrian camping

West Block

Equestrian camping is available South of the Belza day use area.

This area includes:

  • Information kiosk
  • Horse pens
  • Vault toilet
  • Water tank
  • Manure receptacle
  • Close proximity to potable water and Coulee Centre at the Frenchman Valley Campground (500 metre walk)

This area is not enclosed in bison proof fencing. Water tank and troughs at the equestrian camping areas are not available when overnight temperatures are below 0 °C.

East Block

Equestrian camping is available east of the Rock Creek Visitor Centre and Rock Creek Campground.

This area includes:

  • Horse pens
  • Round pen
  • Water tank
  • Manure receptacle
  • Proximity to vault toilet and summer kitchen

Water tank and troughs at the equestrian camping areas are not available when overnight temperatures are below 0 °C.

Tipi camping

West Block

Tipi accommodations are located at the Two Trees Day Use Area South of Val Marie, Saskatchewan.

  • Raised wooden platform inside
  • Sleep up to 5 people with cots, up to 8 with sleeping mats
  • Short walk from parking area, carry cart provided for assistance
  • Picnic tables
  • Adirondack chairs
  • Shared fire pit and BBQ
  • Easy access to vault toilets  
  • No fire or food allowed inside the tipis
  • Use not recommended during lightning storms or high winds
  • Camp cots, Thermarests and lanterns available for rent at an additional cost

There is no potable water available at this site.

East Block

Tipi accommodations are located adjacent to the Rock Creek Campground.

  • Short walk across the bridge, carry cart available
  • Adirondack chairs
  • Picnic tables
  • Shared fire pit
  • Easy access to potable water and vault toilets
  • No fire or food allowed inside the tipis
  • Close proximity to the summer kitchen – respite from the heat, a location for cooking & eating, and a hub for park programs
  • Camp cots, sleeping bags, thermarests and lanterns available for rent at an additional cost
