The Town of Maple Creek
Location: Maple Creek, Saskatchewan
Known as the first “Cow Town” of the old West, historic Maple Creek is a growing community that serves as a gateway for an estimated 250,000 tourists each year heading to the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, Fort Walsh, and the historic site of the Cypress Hills Massacre.
Located less than 10 minutes off the Trans Canada Highway midway between the cities of Medicine Hat, Alberta and Swift Current, Saskatchewan, this bustling hub of the southwest was recently voted Canada’s Greatest Western Town, and is home to such signature events as Taste of Maple Creek, building on it’s reputation as a fine dining centre, as well as the Annual Heritage Festival, the Maple Creek Pro Rodeo, Cowboy Poetry & Western Art Show, Cowtown Christmas, and the iconic Battle of Little Big Puck.
In addition to hosting two historic Museums, the Town of Maple Creek is also home to a variety of shops and services including women’s clothing, western wear, kitchen gifts and novelties, two pharmacies, western Canada’s largest toy store and the Broken Spoken Fine Art Gallery. Here you’ll also find grocery, bakery and gas services, and a host of accommodations including Willowbend Campground and Cabins, the newly renovated Willowbend Motel, Ghostown Blues B&B, and the luxurious Cobblecreek Lodge. You’ll also find plenty of fine dining opportunities, from the Star Cafe (named one of Canada’s Top 10 Highway Hotspots by the Food Network of Canada), the Rockin Horse Cookhouse and Bar, The Daily Grind Coffee and Gifts, The Shop Bakery & Deli, and Grotto Gardens home to Downward Goat Yoga!
Maple Creek also houses a fabulous 9-hole golf course, various music venues and tons of live music and cultural events. It’s no wonder that more and more people are being drawn to this energetic community where Past is Present.
