Town of Shaunavon
Location: Shaunavon, SK
The Town of Shaunavon is a quaint, picturesque community nestled in the heart of Southwest Saskatchewan.
At the corner of highways 13 and 37, this bustling agricultural and oil community is in the centre of the Cypress Hills Destination Area. This beautiful family community is located approximately 120 kilometres northwest of Grasslands National Park, and about 120 kilometres east of the Cypress Hills centre block. A short 30 kilometre drive west of Shaunavon lies Eastend, home of Scotty the T-Rex.
Known as Boomtown, or Oasis on the Prairies, Shaunavon was established in 1913 as a result of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). As a midway point, Shaunavon supplied water for the trains passing through. Eight hours after land plots went on sale, over 370 had been sold earning a total of $210,000 – a huge sum for the time. In just two short months Shaunavon gained village status. Making history just eleven short months later, Boomtown was the first community in Canada to go from village to town status in less than a year.
Shaunavon is home to many tourist attractions including the award winning Harvest Eatery and Fresh Market, the Grand Coteau Heritage and Cultural Centre, Alley-Oops Fun and Games, and Ranch House Meat Company to name just a few. Alluring features such as a museum, art galleries, bowling alley, swimming pool, tennis courts, skate-board park, baseball diamonds, a hockey and curling arena and so much more will quickly fill your days! With quiet campgrounds, a beautiful walking trail, and parks galore this family friendly town is the perfect place to stay and relax. Amenities such as a grocery store, two pharmacies, a hospital, restaurants as well as clothing, jewelry and furniture stores are available and ready to serve you!
Annual events that occur year round such as Boomtown Days in the summer, Darkhorse Dinner Theatre in the fall, the Parade of Lights in December, and I Love Shaunavon Day in February, make this community a wondrous place to visit at any time of the year!
